The Executive Board of the LIADA has endorsed the New York State Affordable Housing bill as put forth by Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli and Senator Michael M. Balboni.
This bill would require a builder of any new development of five units or more to set aside 10 percent for families making no more than 80 percent of the area’s median income. In return, municipalities would let developers build at greater density. In cases where construction of affordable units on a given site is impractical, the bill would allow developers to either build elsewhere or contribute to an affordable housing fund.
This bill has already passed the State Assembly twice, and deserves to be passed by the Senate. It is an excellent solution to the housing needs of Long Island. The Executive Board of the LIADA asks you to write to your State Senator advocating its passage.
See the sample letter below.
The Honorable _____________
New York State Senate
Albany, N.Y. 12247
Dear Senator _____________(see list below):
I strongly urge you to vote for the passage of the Affordable Housing Bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli and Senator Michael Balboni, which has already been passed by the Assembly. Long Island is losing valuable business opportunities, and our young people are moving away due to lack of affordable housing. Our housing needs in terms of homelessness are also staggering. This bill would provide much needed incentives to begin addressing the problem.
Sincerely yours,
