New business:Speaker: Pat Maher
Pat Maher is running for the 13th Legislative District, in her hometown East Meadow. The district includes North Merrick, Westbury, Salisbury, (conservative areas). She is opposed by Mehinder Singh.
In East Meadow she had a forum on Affordable Housing. Pat is Pro Choice.
Treasurer’s Report: Mary McWilliams recommended we keep our account where it is. A motion was made by Mannie to accept the recommendation and report, which was seconded and passed unanimously.
Social Security article: One member, Greg White, responded to our column concerning Social Security system by noting that there is a “life Insurance” component. Lita will expand on Social Security in another column or two.
Greg Peterson announced candidacy opposing Suozzi for County Executive.
Issues: Should we take a position on the Right to Remove Life Support for the woman in Florida? Since this is a wedge issue that has backfired on the conservatives, no action taken.
Helen reported that moveon.org has a letter on its website that can be emailed by individuals to their congressman in support of preventing the President from stacking of the Federal Courts. Should we urge our members to use this?
Newsletter: Motion made, seconded and unanimously passed that our next newsletter have a section where members can request that future issues be emailed to them rather than mailed to them.
Mannie agreed to write an article on the millions of people dying of Malaria in due to ban on DDT.
Helen to send email to Dean’s organization.
Muriel has left a message for Tim Bishop to call her about speaking at a future meeting.
Judith called H Weitzman’s office about April’s meeting, Spitzer about June meeting and will call Jerry Nadler as well.
Mark to maintain contact with the Farm Workers Union
Wayne Hall - won election, color flyer, Judith thanked us for our support of his candidacy.
Next meeting is April 16th at 10 AM, May meeting also at 10 AM, no date set.
Motion to adjourn by Mark, 2nd by Muriel at 11:35 so people could attend Cynthia Kouril’s announcement of candidacy for DA against Denis Dillon.
